1914 Brough 497cc “Flat Twin” Model H

1914 Brough 497cc “Flat Twin” Model H

Believed to be the oldest surviving example of its type, this remarkable 1914 Brough 497cc “Flat Twin” Model H represents an important chapter in motorcycling history.

William Brough, the father of the legendary George Brough, was an accomplished motorcycle builder in his own right.

According to legend, a heated argument between father and son led George to leave the family business, declaring, “I am starting my own motorcycle company, and I shall call them Brough… Brough Superior… as they will be superior to yours.” Whether the story is true or not – we’d rather not spoil it!

This motorcycle was rediscovered in the mid-1970s by John Greenland, who undertook a meticulous restoration.

Accompanying the bike is a substantial history file, including letters, invoices, and photographs documenting the process. In 1989, “L 734” was sold to the National Motorcycle Museum, where it remained for decades before being acquired by us four or five years ago.

A true piece of motorcycling history, this early Brough stands as a rare and treasured survivor from the dawn of motorcycle engineering.

UK and worldwide delivery options are available.
